Elderly couple rescued after daughter and son-in-law lock them inside home to seize property in Natore

An elderly couple in Natore’s Gurudaspur municipality was held captive in their own home on Monday as their daughter and son-in-law allegedly orchestrated an armed takeover of their property. The incident, which took place in the Chachkoir Puranpara neighborhood, involved the reported vandalism and looting of commercial properties owned by 62-year-old Moslem Sarkar and his wife, Marjina Begum.
According to a report by Prothom Alo, the victims filed a formal complaint with local police, identifying their daughter, Beauty Begum, and her husband, police constable Abu Said, as the primary instigators. The couple allegedly enlisted the help of Sarwar Shah, a local man currently facing separate legal proceedings for vandalism and looting, to execute the takeover.

The dispute stems from a land transfer agreement in which Sarkar had conditionally gifted 56.5 decimal of land to his five daughters. The terms of the agreement stipulated that Sarkar and his wife would retain the right to possess the land and collect rent from two businesses built on the premises for the remainder of their lives. Sarkar alleges that Beauty Begum, influenced by her husband, sought to seize 16 decimal of land adjacent to the family home, leading to a long-standing family rift.
Sarkar recently initiated legal proceedings to cancel the land deed transfer due to the ongoing friction. On Monday morning, witnesses report that a group of 10 to 15 men, led by Sarwar Shah, descended upon the property. The assailants reportedly locked the elderly couple inside their home before breaking into and looting the two rented shops. Tenants Shafiul Islam and Kamal Hossain, who operate businesses on the site, estimated their financial losses at approximately 500,000 taka.

Police were alerted to the situation via the national emergency hotline 999. Although officers arrived and managed to free the captive couple by breaking the locks on their door, the perpetrators had already fled the scene. No arrests have been made to date.
In a telephone interview, Beauty Begum admitted to taking possession of the land, asserting that she was entitled to her portion of the property and hired individuals to assist her while her husband was away at work. Constable Abu Said denied direct involvement in the incident, claiming that while he was aware of the dispute over his father-in-law’s refusal to vacate the land, he was not present during the confrontation. Sarwar Shah also denied personal involvement despite being identified at the scene.
Akbar Ali, an inspector with the Gurudaspur police, confirmed that an investigation is underway. The authorities have vowed to take appropriate legal action as the elderly couple continues to express concerns regarding their ongoing safety.
