Dhaka University (DU) students thwarted an attempted rape of a street child in the Salimullah Muslim Hall area on Wednesday (March 4) night, catching the suspect red-handed and handing him over to police.

The accused, Mahbubur Rahman (also known as Palashi), who works in milk supply at Palashi Market, was apprehended by university students and members of the proctorial team on the footpath adjacent to Salimullah Muslim Hall.

DUCSU Executive Member Sarbo Mitra Chakma described the incident in a Facebook post late Wednesday night as saving Dhaka University from “a stigmatizing night” or “a night of disgrace.”

According to Chakma, the suspect was taken to Shahbagh Police Station without any physical harm, adhering to civil society standards. Hall residents informed him by phone, prompting him to immediately go to the police station.

The accused reportedly confessed to the allegations, stating that he acted under “Satan’s provocation” and claimed he did not understand how he ended up attempting the act.

Chakma expressed deep concern for the safety and future security of the child victim. He pointed out that attempted rape cases often suffer from a lack of strong, concrete evidence. While the child may admit certain details when questioned carefully, such statements typically do not constitute sufficient legal proof.

Due to the high costs of pursuing a case, legal complexities, and reluctance from potential complainants (badi) to come forward, no formal case was filed. Instead, the accused was released after signing a bond/undertaking (muchleka).

In a pointed remark, Chakma addressed those who frequently demand strict adherence to the law:

“Those who always invoke the name of the law—open your eyes this time. See how tightly the law binds our hands and feet. Look how even when we stay within the law, justice remains out of reach. Today, I did not go outside the law at all!”
