Dhaka South City Corporation orders removal of unauthorized commercial stalls from Bahadur Shah Park

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has issued a final ultimatum to organizers of an unauthorized commercial fair at the historic Bahadur Shah Park in Old Dhaka, ordering the immediate removal of all stalls by Sunday night. Authorities have warned that if the deadline is not met, an eviction drive will be conducted on Monday.
The directive followed a mobile court operation led by DSCC Executive Magistrate Mohammad Aminul Islam on Sunday. In a subsequent press statement, the DSCC confirmed that the organizers had exceeded the scope of their original permit, which was issued exclusively for a tree fair. Instead, the park was being used to host a commercial fair, causing significant obstruction to the movement and recreation of local residents and visitors.
Field reports indicated that the fair featured a wide array of non-related products, including food, clothing, jewelry, toys, and kitchenware. While those overseeing the site claimed to have obtained authorization for 60 stalls, 33 were found to be operational during inspections. Vendors reported that each stall holder was being charged a daily rent of 3,000 taka.
The DSCC stated that the action is part of a broader initiative to protect public interest and preserve the environment of the city’s parks. The corporation emphasized that such enforcement operations will continue across the city to prevent the misuse of public spaces.
