Dhaka Police Seize Cannabis Smuggled into Court Inside Bread Loaf

Security officials at a Dhaka court thwarted an attempt to smuggle narcotics into a holding cell on Sunday after discovering cannabis concealed inside a loaf of bread brought for an inmate. The incident occurred as suspect Md. Mamun was being transferred to the court’s detention area following a hearing before Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam.
According to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), the incident began when one of Mamun’s relatives approached the prisoner with a package of food. While the escort officer, Constable Md. Shahed, initially declined the request, he eventually permitted the delivery of the bread on humanitarian grounds.
Upon conducting a secondary inspection, the officer noticed a suspicious puncture in the bread. A closer examination revealed two packets of cannabis hidden inside the loaf. The discovery was made at approximately 3 p.m. following the suspect’s appearance in court.
DMP Prosecution Deputy Commissioner Mohiuddin Mahmud Sohel confirmed that a general diary has been filed regarding the breach of security. Authorities are currently reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the court premises to identify the individual who delivered the food.
Officials stated that investigators intend to interrogate Mamun to gain further insight into the smuggling attempt. Once the individual responsible for the delivery is identified, the police plan to initiate formal legal proceedings against them. The specific charges underlying Mamun’s initial detention were not immediately disclosed.
