Court Grants Three-Day Remand for Syeda Monalisa Islam in Businessman Abdul Wadud Murder Case

A Dhaka court on Thursday granted a three-day remand for Syeda Monalisa Islam, vice-president of the Jubo Mohila League’s central committee, in connection with the murder of businessman Abdul Wadud during the July uprising. The accused is the wife of former State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Junaid issued the order following a hearing on a police request. During the proceedings, defense counsel Tarikul Islam petitioned for the remand to be dismissed and requested bail for his client. The state counsel opposed the motion, leading the court to approve the three-day custodial interrogation period.
The investigation into the murder is being conducted by Inspector Amjad Hossain Talukdar of the Detective Branch’s Ramna zonal team. Following an application by the investigator, the court formally recorded Monalisa Islam’s arrest in the murder case on August 12. A subsequent request for her remand, filed on August 13, was reserved for Thursday’s ruling.
According to case documents, businessman Abdul Wadud was fatally shot near Gate No. 1 of the New Market area on the afternoon of July 19, 2024, during the height of the July movement. Following his death, his brother-in-law, Abdur Rahman, filed a murder case naming 130 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.
Police arrested Monalisa Islam late on the night of February 16, 2025, from a residence on Eskaton Road in the capital. She has since been implicated in multiple legal cases and remains in custody. The organization she served, the Jubo Mohila League, has since been banned.
