Court denies bail to Bidisha Siddique in fraud case

A Dhaka metropolitan sessions court on Wednesday denied bail to Bidisha Siddique, the former wife of late president and Jatiya Party founder Hussain Muhammad Ershad, in connection with a fraud case.
Judge Md. Shahjahan Kabir issued the order following a hearing. Bidisha’s legal counsel, Md. Atikur Rahman, confirmed the development.
Bidisha was arrested on August 25 due to an outstanding arrest warrant stemming from a two-year prison sentence. She was sent to jail the following day. The court denied her bail application on the grounds that the duration of her current incarceration was insufficient.
Hemayet Uddin Khan, the lawyer representing the plaintiff, stated that the prosecution opposed the bail petition citing that the period served in custody did not warrant a release at this stage.
On May 20, Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam sentenced Bidisha to two years of rigorous imprisonment for fraud related to the sale of an apartment. In addition to the prison term, she was fined 10,000 taka, with an additional month of imprisonment in default of payment. Because she was absent from court on the day of the verdict, a warrant for her arrest was issued at that time.
The case was originally filed in 2008 by businessman Mosharraf Hossain. Police submitted a charge sheet on June 22, 2008, and the trial formally commenced following the framing of charges.
