The police have submitted a charge sheet to the court accusing the accused Sohail Rana and his wife Sapna Akhter in the case of the brutal murder of an eight-year-old child after rape in the capital’s Pallavi. The court has fixed June 1 as the starting date for the hearing of the charge sheet.
Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Prevention Tribunal Judge Masrur Salekin’s court passed the order on Sunday afternoon after taking into account the complaint against the accused. As a result, five days after the case was filed, the police completed the investigation and submitted the charge sheet. No other case of rape and murder has been filed in such a quick time in the country’s memory.
Yesterday afternoon, the investigating officer of the case, Pallabi Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Ahiduzzaman Bhuiyan, accused the accused Sohel Rana and his wife and submitted the charge sheet to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashraful Haque’s court accepted the charge sheet and ordered the case to be transferred for trial. Later the case went to the Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Prevention Tribunal. After that, the Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Prevention Tribunal took cognizance of the complaint and ordered June 1 as the hearing date for framing the complaint. The two were taken back to jail later in the afternoon.
The dismembered body of the child was recovered from the three-storey flat of a building in Pallavi around 11:30 on May 19. After the incident, the main accused Sohail Rana escaped by breaking the grill of the toilet of the flat. However, his wife was arrested from that house. And Sohel Rana was arrested from Fatulla in Narayanganj that same day. The day after the incident, the child’s father filed a case at Pallabi police station. In the afternoon of May 20, accused Sohel Rana gave a statement in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid. In the statement, he confessed to killing the child after raping.
Prime Minister Tariq Rahman met the child’s family after the cabinet meeting on May 21 night. He assured to ensure a fair investigation and trial of this incident quickly. After the Prime Minister’s assurance, the autopsy report was submitted four days after the date of the case. And DNA samples of the child and the accused person are tested and the report is handed over to the investigating officer of the case within three days. DNA samples are tested from the forensic unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police. Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital of the capital prepared the autopsy report.
The government has appointed lawyer Azizur Rahman Dulu as a special public prosecutor (government counsel) to complete the trial quickly and efficiently. He will handle the case on behalf of the state party. On the other hand, Dhaka Lawyers Association has decided not to provide any legal services to the accused, protesting the murder.
In such a situation, the government appointed Musa Kalimullah as a lawyer at the state expense to handle the case on behalf of the accused yesterday evening after the charge sheet was framed. He is a member of Dhaka District Lawyers Association.
People of different classes and professions and groups and organizations have been expressing their anger by condemning this brutal murder. They have been demanding a fair investigation and speedy trial of the incident. Among other cases which have been filed in a short period of time, Magura’s child rape and murder case is one of them. After the investigation of this incident on March 6 last year, the charge sheet was submitted within 37 days. And the verdict was announced after 73 days of the incident.
Prior to the Magura killings, adequate measures were not being taken to prevent incidents of violence against women and children, especially against the girl child. In view of such allegations, amendments were made to the Prevention of Violence against Women and Children Act last year, so that investigations and prosecutions can be completed at the earliest. This amendment brought in 2025 has been approved by the current elected government.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed expects the trial of the child murder case after rape in Pallavi to be completed in five-seven days. He said, the government will do whatever is necessary to ensure maximum punishment for this crime.
In response to the journalist’s question at the ‘BSRF Dialogue’ organized by the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) at the Secretariat yesterday, the Home Minister further said that the government has nothing more to do. The accused was arrested within seven hours in connection with this murder. The accused gave a confessional statement to the court within a day. His wife has also been arrested as an accomplice in that section 164 statement. The government quickly got the court’s permission to conduct the DNA test. That exam takes three days. It was over in three days. The report was submitted on Saturday afternoon. The post-mortem report has arrived. Putting all these together, the work of framing the charge sheet was completed by Saturday night.
Salahuddin Ahmad commented that these rape incidents are due to social degradation and lack of social values. He said, social reform is needed here. Social values need to be highlighted on the basis of religious values, on the basis of culture. But some bad culture has fallen into the society. Due to this bad culture, the level of rape is going beyond tolerance.
The Home Minister said that the government’s job is to ensure the rule of law and justice system. In the future also they will not spare the accused or the perpetrators of any such heinous crime in any way.
