China pledges long-term support for Bangladesh development goals following talks with Prime Minister Rahman

Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged that Beijing will remain a “trusted friend” to Bangladesh, committing to long-term support for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s development agenda. The commitment was made during a high-level bilateral meeting held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on the final day of the Prime Minister’s official visit.

Following the summit, Humayun Kabir, the Prime Minister’s advisor on foreign affairs, briefed the press at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. He stated that President Xi emphasized the endurance of the bilateral partnership, describing it as a strategic, long-term commitment rather than a temporary arrangement. The Chinese leader expressed full confidence in Prime Minister Rahman’s leadership and reaffirmed Beijing’s readiness to assist in Bangladesh’s economic transformation, regional cooperation, and long-term stability.

In a move to strengthen Bangladesh’s global integration, China has officially signaled its support for the nation’s efforts to join the BRICS bloc and become a partner of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Furthermore, Beijing expressed its backing for Bangladesh’s interests in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, a development that could significantly broaden the country’s access to regional markets.

The delegation also held discussions with Zhao Leji, a prominent figure in China’s political hierarchy and the third-ranking member of the Politburo Standing Committee. Zhao echoed the President’s sentiments, framing Prime Minister Rahman as a close partner essential to the collaborative growth of the “Global South.” During these talks, Chinese leadership highlighted potential cooperation across critical sectors, including healthcare, education, technical vocational training, and comprehensive water and river management.

Economic ties emerged as a primary pillar of the visit, with the Prime Minister holding meetings with various Chinese industry leaders and business representatives. These engagements are expected to catalyze billions of dollars in new investment. Amid a global climate of tightening development finance, China has also committed over $300 million in grant assistance to support Bangladesh’s priority projects.

Reflecting on the outcome of the visit, Kabir characterized the trip as both historic and transformative. He stated that the diplomatic engagement marks the beginning of a new era, asserting that Prime Minister Rahman’s vision for national development and regional stability has gained significant international traction. According to the advisor, the visit stands as a milestone that will enable Bangladesh to project a more powerful and positive influence within the region and on the global stage.
