According to local sources, tensions first arose between the two sides based on Facebook posts and counter-posts on various issues including the implementation of the referendum verdict. At one stage of the argument, the two parties started fighting. Later, workers from both sides gathered and clashed.

Meanwhile, the two sides have raised counter-complaints about the same incident. An activist of the Chhatra Dal claimed that the leaders of the camp posted provocative posts on Facebook about the wall writing in the Government Mir Ismail Hossain Degree College. On getting to know about this, at one stage of the discussion, the camp workers attacked and later attacked again by gathering people on social media.
