Mymensingh, Bangladesh – A student leader at Mymensingh Medical College is in critical condition after being attacked with a hammer while in police custody, an incident stemming from a dispute over motorcycle fuel between two friends that escalated into factional clashes within the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD).

Amanullah Muaz, an MBBS-61 batch student, sustained severe head injuries and is currently admitted to the National Institute of Neurosciences & Hospital in Dhaka. The attack occurred Friday night outside a dormitory as police were escorting Muaz away, an event captured in a video widely circulated on social media. The footage shows uniformed and plainclothes police officers leading Muaz out of the hostel when an assailant suddenly strikes him on the head with a hammer near the main gate.

Muaz’s elder brother, Ahmad Shafi, has filed a case naming 12 individuals and 15-20 unidentified others. Following the incident, central JCD leadership, via a letter signed by office secretary Md. Jahangir Alam, suspended Nur A Jawat (Rutab), a senior joint convener of the Mymensingh Medical College JCD unit, and Nafiul Islam from their primary memberships. Nafiul Islam has been arrested in connection with the attack and subsequently sent to jail, according to Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Shibirul Islam.

The lawsuit alleges that the conflict originated from an argument between Muaz and fellow MBBS-61 student Mir Hamidur Rahman over bringing fuel from a petrol pump. This dispute led to a group of individuals, including the defendants, gathering with sticks at the dormitory. The hammer attack on Muaz occurred at approximately 11:20 p.m. on Friday as he exited the Baghmara area hostel. The complaint specifically states that Nafiul Islam struck Muaz with a hammer, intending to kill him. Muaz was initially taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital by classmates, locals, and police before being transferred to Dhaka due to his deteriorating condition.

Tanvir Abdullah, convener of the Mymensingh Medical College JCD unit, described the sequence of events. He stated that the initial altercation, which resulted in a wrist fracture for Muaz, occurred after Muaz confronted Hamidur Rahman about the fuel issue. Muaz then retaliated, striking Hamidur’s head with an iron pipe. Following Hamidur’s hospitalization, campus tensions rose, and Muaz was confined to a room before police were called. Abdullah emphasized that the unit viewed the incident as a personal matter and aimed to hand Muaz over to the police for legal action. However, Hamidur’s group became agitated after receiving a concerning CT scan report for his head injury, prompting them to consider mob action. The attack on Muaz occurred as police were escorting him, with Abdullah noting Muaz’s current critical condition.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration) Abdullah Al Mamun of Mymensingh acknowledged the sudden nature of the attack as police were escorting Muaz, attributing it to internal factional conflicts. He stated that an investigation is underway to determine if there was any negligence on the part of the police.
