Baishakhi procession in Jahangirnagar with birds, bulls and horses as symbols of peace

Teachers and students took out Baisakhi procession at Jahangirnagar University to welcome Bengali New Year. Today, Tuesday, around 11 o’clock, the procession started from the front of the business faculty building of the university.
The procession was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan. It ends at the Salim Al Din Muktamanch by visiting the various streets of the campus.
This year’s New Year’s theme at Jahangirnagar University was ‘New Year’s Unity, Resurgence of Democracy’. Students participated in the procession with various portraits including bulls, horses, birds. According to them, the bull motif conveys a message of resistance against evil forces. The bird motif symbolizes freedom, free-thinking, peace and possibility. And the horse is represented as a symbol of strength and victory.
Muttasim Billah, a student of drama and theater department who participated in the procession, said that they are celebrating the first day of the Bengali year with joy and hope. In the new year, the country will move forward by warding off all the evil forces. Besides, he expressed the hope that the environment of independent conduct of activities of all classes of people, including Baul, will be ensured.
Various departments of the university have organized different events on the occasion of New Year celebration. On the surface, it can be seen that a cultural program is going on at the Mahua stage under the initiative of the Bengal department. Apart from this, the day is being celebrated in various departments including Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Department of Geography and Environment, Department of Anthropology, Department of Government and Politics.
After the procession, Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Mahfuzur Rahman said, like every year, the New Year is being celebrated in a festive atmosphere. The university has long encouraged cultural activities, which is one of its hallmarks. He expressed the hope that the future generation should hold this tradition.
Convener of the New Year celebration committee and professor of environmental science department Jamaluddin said, according to tradition, every year the first Baisakh is celebrated centrally and departmentally in the university. This time also various departments and organizations have organized a colorful event. He expressed hope that the new year will be happy for everyone.
Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof. Sohail Ahmed, Proctor Prof. AKM Rashidul Alam, Deans of various faculties, Jaksur Vice-President Abdur Rashid, Convener of Branch Students’ Association Zahiruddin Babar and teachers and students were present in the procession.
