Chattogram authorities fine three popular restaurants for sanitary violations

National consumer rights authorities in Chattogram have penalized three prominent restaurants a combined 170,000 taka following the discovery of severe health code violations during surprise inspections on Wednesday.

The Directorate of National Consumers’ Right Protection targeted the upscale Handi restaurant in the city’s WASA area, where inspectors reported finding cockroaches swarming cooking ingredients and even floating inside vats of prepared soup. The establishment was fined 100,000 taka for operating in an environment deemed hazardous to public health.

During the same operation, officials turned their focus to Zaman Hotel and Restaurant and the CP Five Star outlet. Inspectors found both establishments engaged in the use of recycled, burnt cooking oil and maintaining substandard hygienic conditions during food preparation. Consequently, Zaman Hotel and Restaurant was fined 50,000 taka, while CP Five Star was assessed a 20,000 taka penalty.

The operation was led by Mohammad Fayez Ullah, deputy director of the directorate’s Chattogram office. He confirmed that the evidence gathered during the raids revealed systemic failures in sanitation and food safety protocols, necessitating the immediate financial sanctions to ensure consumer protection.
