Two journalists sustained injuries and were robbed in Chapainawabganj late Thursday night after confronting a group of individuals creating a disturbance at a tea stall. The incident occurred at Baten Kha Morh in the city.

The injured journalists were identified as Tareque Rahman, district correspondent for Channel One and Amader Desh newspaper, and Tareque Aziz, district correspondent for My TV. Both were admitted to the district hospital for treatment following the assault.

Speaking to Prothom Alo, Tareque Rahman recounted that he and Tareque Aziz were having tea around 10:15 PM when a group of seven to eight individuals, led by Md. Rabbi (30), began verbally abusing others at the stall. When the journalists intervened and asked them to stop, one of Rabbi’s accomplices aggressively questioned Tareque Aziz and then assaulted him, throwing a glass mug. Rahman stated that when he attempted to shield Aziz, he was also knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked and beaten with sticks by the group.

Rahman further detailed his injuries, including scraped skin on his right hand and bruises across his body. Tareque Aziz suffered injuries to his left-hand fingers and endured severe physical assault. The assailants reportedly stole 10,000 Taka and a mobile phone from Aziz during the nearly half-hour ordeal. Local residents rescued the journalists after the attackers departed and took them to the district hospital. A formal complaint was filed with the police after their initial treatment.

Ekramul Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chapainawabganj Sadar Model Police Station, confirmed that a case was registered around midnight on Thursday. The complaint names Md. Rabbi of Fakirpara Kadomtola, his accomplice Sohel Rana (32) from the same neighborhood, and 8-10 other unidentified individuals. OC Hossain added that police observed visible injuries on the victims and visited the scene of the attack. Operations are underway to apprehend the suspects.

Police records indicate that Md. Rabbi faces nine previous cases, including charges of murder, robbery, and illegal possession of weapons, though he is currently out on bail for all charges.
