Eight injured in police-drug dealer shootout in Narayanganj

A counter-narcotics operation in Fatullah, Narayanganj, descended into violence late Saturday night as suspected drug traffickers clashed with police, resulting in injuries to eight people, including five law enforcement officers. The confrontation took place around 11:00 p.m. near the Masdair Patengar intersection.

According to police, the incident began when an anti-drug unit apprehended a notorious local drug kingpin known as “Fighter Monir” alongside his two associates, Naim and Masum. Upon the arrest, a group of the suspects’ accomplices attempted to intervene by surrounding the officers and launching a volley of bricks and stones.

The situation escalated when the suspects opened fire on the police, discharging five to six rounds. Officers responded by firing two shotgun shells in return. While no one was struck by gunfire, the debris from the skirmish left five officers—Sub-Inspectors Nandan Sarkar and Monir, Assistant Sub-Inspectors Kamrul Hassan and Monir Hossain, and Constable Ashik—injured. Three bystanders, identified as Helaluddin, a driver named Babu, and A.K.M. Shafiuddin, also sustained injuries during the chaotic scene. All eight were treated at Khanpur Hospital.

Fatullah Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbub Alam stated that the operation was launched following a tip-off regarding illicit narcotics activity in the area. Authorities confirmed that the three primary suspects remain in custody, and police are currently conducting follow-up operations to track down the accomplices involved in the assault.

This confrontation follows a similar pattern of violence against security forces in the region. Recently, an intelligence team from the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) was attacked with sharp weapons by drug traffickers in the West Deobhog area of Narayanganj. That incident led to a joint operation that resulted in the recovery of significant quantities of narcotics and weapons, along with the arrest of 11 individuals.
