Bogura College Staff Accused of Embezzlement as Students Miss HSC Exam Start

Ten students from Mahiswar Degree College in Bogura were barred from participating in their Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations after a college employee allegedly embezzled their registration fees. The students, who discovered their exclusion only on the morning of the first exam, had paid the computer operator, Sabbir Hossain, to complete their registration process well after the official deadline.

The students report that they paid between 4,000 and 4,500 taka each to Hossain—significantly more than the official 2,435 taka fee—under the assurance that their forms had been submitted. Although the college’s official registration window closed on March 18, the operator led the students to believe their late entries were being processed. When other students received their registration cards and admit cards on June 24, the victims were told their documents were delayed due to the late filing.

Upon arriving at the college on Thursday morning to collect their missing documents, the students found that no cards had been issued. As the severity of the situation became clear, Sabbir Hossain reportedly fled the campus, leaving the students facing an uncertain academic future.

College Principal Motiur Rahman stated that an investigation is underway and pledged that legal action will be taken if the allegations of fraud are substantiated. Roughly 600 students from the institution are sitting for this year’s HSC examinations.

Bogura District Commissioner Md. Toufiqur Rahman expressed concern over the institution’s failure to report the issue earlier, noting that timely communication could have allowed for intervention with the Rajshahi Education Board. After personally contacting the board chairman, the commissioner confirmed that the students will receive their admit cards to allow them to participate in the remainder of their exams. However, because they missed the initial test, the students will be required to retake that specific subject in next year’s examination cycle.
