BGB and local villagers heighten surveillance along Bangladesh-India border amid recurring push-in attempts

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has intensified surveillance along the Panchagarh frontier following a surge in attempts by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) to push individuals across the international boundary. In a move to bolster national security, local villagers living in border communities have joined BGB personnel in patrolling the area, remaining on high alert to prevent illegal crossings.

The heightened security presence is particularly visible in areas including Mirgarh, Mistripara, Barabari-Pradhanpara, Baradarga, and Ghagra, where security forces have maintained a constant watch since Wednesday. Tensions in the region were exacerbated last Friday when BSF attempted to push a group of ten people, including women and children, into Bangladesh through the Barabari-Pradhanpara border.

The group remained stranded on a narrow ridge in a field along the zero line for approximately 69 hours, enduring harsh weather conditions after BGB refused to allow their entry. Despite two flag meetings between border officials, the deadlock persisted for nearly three days. Ultimately, the BSF retreated, turning off security lights and pulling the group back into Indian territory at approximately 2:40 a.m. on Sunday.

To maintain continuous oversight across the region’s extensive border—which spans nearly 278 kilometers under the jurisdiction of three different BGB battalions—authorities have equipped local residents with flashlights and whistles. These tools allow villagers to signal security forces immediately if suspicious activity is detected. Residents interviewed at the border expressed a strong commitment to supporting the BGB in defending the territory.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Md. Sirajul Islam, commander of the Nilphamari 56 BGB Battalion, border guards face daily attempts by the BSF to push people across the boundary under the cover of darkness. He noted that while these efforts occur multiple times each night, the combination of professional BGB vigilance and community cooperation has proven effective in thwarting unauthorized entries.
