Banned Awami League affiliate holds protest march in Chittagong as police launch manhunt

Members of the banned youth wing of the Awami League, Jubo League, staged a protest march in Chittagong’s Agrabad commercial area on Friday, donning burial shrouds in a public display of defiance. The demonstrators gathered in front of the Power Development Board building under the banner of the Chittagong Metropolitan Jubo League, drawing attention as footage of the procession circulated widely across social media platforms.
The 58-second video shows the activists moving from the port area toward the Agrabad intersection via Sheikh Mujib Road. Their banner carried demands for justice regarding incidents of child mortality and sexual assault, while also voicing opposition to recent hikes in electricity and gas prices. Upon reaching the power building, the group paused to chant slogans against the current state of affairs.

This incident marks the third protest organized by a banned Awami League affiliate in Chittagong this month. Previously, members of the proscribed Bangladesh Chhatra League held demonstrations in the Anannya Residential Area on Wednesday and at the GEC intersection on Monday morning. In response to these recurring unauthorized gatherings, local authorities have conducted a series of crackdowns, resulting in the arrest of 70 individuals associated with the banned political entities across various police stations in the city.
Aminur Rashid, Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police’s Public Relations Department, confirmed that law enforcement is currently reviewing the video footage of the Agrabad protest. He stated that the police have initiated a process to identify and apprehend the individuals involved in the demonstration.
