Bangladesh Reaffirms Strategic Ties with Riyadh While Maintaining Diplomatic Balance

Bangladesh’s decision to join the Saudi Arabia-led military alliance is a strategic move aimed at addressing regional security threats rather than a measure directed against Iran, according to Humayun Kabir, the Prime Minister’s advisor on foreign affairs. Addressing reporters at the Secretariat on Sunday, Kabir clarified that the partnership is primarily focused on countering the Houthi insurgency and deepening the bilateral defense ties between Dhaka and Riyadh.
Kabir emphasized that the relationship with Saudi Arabia extends far beyond traditional religious ties, such as the facilitation of Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. He described the evolving partnership as a robust, strategic alliance, noting that as the custodian of Islam’s holiest sites in Mecca and Medina, Saudi Arabia holds a unique position in Bangladesh’s foreign policy. Given this historical and moral connection, he asserted that Bangladesh remains committed to supporting Saudi security whenever requested.
Regarding recent diplomatic outreach from the United States, Kabir described the visit of U.S. presidential envoy Sergio Gor to Dhaka as a constructive step toward strengthening ties. Following meetings with the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister, Gor expressed the U.S. administration’s high regard for the Bangladeshi leadership. Discussions during the visit spanned a wide array of topics, including trade, investment, technology, and geopolitical cooperation, underscoring the U.S. interest in viewing Bangladesh as a vital partner in the Asia-Pacific region.
Addressing potential concerns regarding regional economic competition, the advisor confirmed that no objections were raised during talks concerning Chinese investments in Bangladesh. Kabir reiterated that the government is committed to a “Bangladesh First” policy, ensuring that the country maintains balanced, non-adversarial relationships with all global powers. By welcoming diverse investments from China, the U.S., and other Western nations, Dhaka aims to prioritize its national interests and foster sustainable economic growth without aligning with any single geopolitical bloc.
