Bangladesh observes the 14th anniversary of the death of Humayun Ahmed, the legendary novelist and filmmaker whose profound influence on Bengali literature continues to resonate today. The acclaimed author, known for his unique narrative style and immense popularity, passed away on July 19, 2012, while undergoing treatment for cancer at a hospital in the United States.
Ahmed rose to prominence in the early 1970s, establishing himself as a formidable literary force with the publication of his debut novel, “Nondito Noroke,” in 1972, followed by “Shonkhonil Karagar” in 1974. His body of work earned him widespread critical and popular acclaim throughout his career, leading to numerous prestigious honors, including the Ekushey Padak, the Bangla Academy Literary Award, the Lekhak Shibir Prize, and the Michael Madhusudan Datta Award.

To commemorate his legacy, a series of memorial events are being held today at the Shahid Smriti Bidyapith, an educational institution founded by the author in his ancestral village of Kutubpur, Kendua. The tributes include the hoisting of black flags, the wearing of mourning badges, and the laying of floral wreaths at a commemorative portrait of the writer. The day’s program also features funeral processions, art and recitation competitions, discussion sessions, and traditional religious services, including Quran recitations and prayer gatherings.
Local initiatives continue throughout the afternoon, with a memorial discussion and prayer session organized by the Kendua Reporters’ Club and the Charcha Sahitya Adda at the Kendua Upazila Parishad. Simultaneously, the Humayun Ahmed Smriti Sangsad has organized a separate commemorative assembly in the Muktarpara area of the district town to honor the enduring contribution of the iconic writer.
