Shaukat Osman Celebrated as a Literary Legend Driven by Social Responsibility and Moral Principles

DHAKA, BANGLADESH — Prominent intellectuals and fiction writers gathered to pay deep tribute to the legendary author and poet Shaukat Osman, describing his vast literary corpus as an invaluable national asset born out of profound social responsibility rather than a quest for cheap popularity or mere entertainment. The remarks were made during a memorial and discussion meeting organized by the Poet Shaukat Osman Smriti Parishad at the Biswa Sahitya Kendra auditorium in the capital, marking the 28th anniversary of the author’s passing.
Presiding over the event, eminent writer and essayist Hasnat Abdul Hai emphasized that Shaukat Osman maintained an unyielding duty towards society and its marginalized citizens from the very inception of his creative journey. He noted that the hardships, lawlessness, and relentless life struggles of low-income communities were consistently mirrored across Osman’s writings. The veteran speaker added that while the literary influence of previous geniuses on subsequent generations might not always be direct, Shaukat Osman remains a uniquely talented and highly influential milestone in the lineage of Bengali fiction whose creative tradition will endure across generations.

The memorial program commenced with the screening of a documentary titled From Generation to Generation: Shaukat Osman, charting his monumental lifecycle from his birth on January 2, 1917, to his demise on May 14, 1998. Discussants highlighted the immense breadth of his literary contributions, which seamlessly spanned acclaimed novels, short stories, analytical essays, theatrical plays, children’s literature, and detailed memoirs.
Attending the function as the chief guest, Emeritus Professor of Dhaka University, Dr. Sukomal Barua, stated that Shaukat Osman deliberately weaponized his prose to awaken human conscience, moral values, and inner spiritual strength. He observed that every society possesses a rare few individuals capable of stirring the collective pulse of life and creating an ocean of intellectual awakening, noting that Shaukat Osman dedicated his entire lifetime to this singular, noble pursuit of upholding human dignity.

Sharing intimate personal memories of the late author, noted filmmaker Jan-Nesar Osman revealed that despite his father’s deeply held personal political convictions, he strictly maintained absolute objectivity as a writer, completely refusing to bow to party politics, structural factions, or institutional divisions. He detailed his father’s staunch rejection of state material benefits, choosing instead to raise a large family solely on his modest academic salary. As an example of his father’s uncompromising integrity, Jan-Nesar recalled an incident from the 1950s when Shaukat Osman, then a government college teacher, was officially allotted a premium 10-katha residential plot in Dhaka’s Banani area. He summarily rejected the allotment, firmly believing that accepting favors from a government strips a writer of the freedom to critique it. His refusal to conform to state structures, including his decision not to join the BAKSHAL regime, ultimately cost him the title of National Professor—a denial that brought him zero regret as he chose to live his entire life with his head held high, continuously speaking out for the common man.
Earlier in the program, Professor Dipu Siddiqui, General Secretary of the Shaukat Osman Memorial Parishad, delivered the welcome address, painting a portrait of the author as a deeply compassionate and simple man who loved humanity unconditionally, irrespective of religion, caste, or profession. He particularly emphasized the author’s immense affection for younger, budding artists and literati, whom he constantly mentored and inspired. The commemorative event also featured emotive responses from readers spanning different generations, including Fazle Rabbi and Sadat Hasin, while the formal proceedings were seamlessly directed by Marine Nazneen.
