Bangladesh Information Minister Outlines Plan for Independent Media Commission to Replace Authoritarian Oversight

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zohir Uddin Swapan has proposed the establishment of a robust media commission with quasi-judicial powers, positioning it as a cornerstone for institutional reform in post-fascist Bangladesh. Speaking at a discussion marking the “Black Day for Newspapers” at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Tuesday, the minister emphasized that such a body could become the nation’s most formidable institution if developed through collective effort and institutional integrity.
Organized by the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ), the event served as a platform to reflect on the evolving challenges facing the press. Minister Swapan noted that while the state may no longer exert direct, heavy-handed control over newsrooms, the profession remains plagued by a lack of security, dignity, and professional fulfillment. He stressed that the state holds a fundamental responsibility to guarantee the professional independence, financial security, and social status of journalists.

To address these systemic issues, the government is actively drafting a National Action Plan, with a preliminary consultation meeting scheduled for June 18. This initiative aims to synchronize efforts to protect press freedom while fostering an environment where journalists can operate without fear or undue pressure.
Acknowledging the rapid rise of citizen journalism, the minister stated that this modern reality cannot be ignored or suppressed. Drawing on regulatory frameworks from Australia, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, the government is exploring strategies to integrate digital news platforms into a structured professional framework.

Minister Swapan issued a stern warning to media outlets, insisting that any entity identifying as a commercial enterprise must adhere strictly to labor laws, ensuring the safety and rights of its employees. He urged stakeholders to view media organizations not merely as profit-driven businesses, but as institutions dedicated to the public interest. The government, he added, remains prepared to offer incentives and support to ethical entrepreneurs who are committed to upholding these professional standards and contributing positively to the nation’s media landscape.
