Bangladesh Demands Extradition of Sheikh Hasina as India Cites Judicial Process for Potential Transfer

Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam stated on Sunday that the determination of whether former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be extradited from India via government mandate or judicial approval rests entirely with the Indian authorities. Speaking to reporters at the International Crimes Tribunal, Islam emphasized that Hasina is a convicted individual in Bangladesh facing multiple pending legal cases and should be returned to face justice.

The Bangladesh government has formally urged India to create an environment conducive to a potential state visit by the Chief Advisor. During a briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ministry spokesperson AKM Shahidul Karim reiterated the government’s stance, confirming that Dhaka has requested the return of Hasina and other fugitives in accordance with existing bilateral extradition treaties. The government is currently awaiting a formal response from New Delhi.

While the Indian government has not yet provided an official statement regarding the extradition request, a report published in The Indian Express citing a senior Indian official indicated that the matter would be resolved through the Indian judicial system. The official clarified that extradition is a legal process rather than a political or diplomatic decision. Under Indian law, the judiciary must determine whether the charges brought against the accused constitute offenses punishable under both countries’ legal frameworks.

Addressing the media regarding this report, Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam maintained that while the legal requirements of the Indian judiciary are an internal matter for India, the Bangladeshi government has already initiated all necessary domestic legal procedures to facilitate Hasina’s return. He underscored that regardless of the process India adopts, the fundamental fact remains that the former Prime Minister is a convicted person who must be brought back to Bangladesh.

When questioned about whether Hasina has been granted political asylum in India, the Chief Prosecutor noted that his office has no official information regarding her status. He reaffirmed that the tribunal’s position remains clear: as a convicted fugitive, she must return to Bangladesh to serve her sentence.
