Bangladesh Braces for Relief as Heatwave Expected to Subside With Increased Rainfall

A severe heatwave swept across 22 districts of Bangladesh on Saturday, pushing temperatures above seasonal norms and disrupting daily life during the peak monsoon period. The sweltering conditions, which marked the highest heat intensity recorded this month, affected areas including the entire Rangpur division, as well as districts such as Dhaka, Rajshahi, Pabna, Tangail, and Cox’s Bazar.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the heatwave was defined by temperatures exceeding 36 degrees Celsius. Rangpur recorded the highest temperature in the country on Saturday at 37.6 degrees Celsius, while the capital city, Dhaka, faced temperatures reaching 36.1 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologist Md. Omar Faruq indicated that relief is expected to arrive starting Sunday as a shift in wind patterns brings respite. The arrival of easterly winds and the reactivation of monsoon currents are anticipated to lower temperatures across the affected regions. Coastal areas, including Hatia and Patuakhali, have already begun to experience rainfall, a trend driven by a well-marked low-pressure area currently developing over the sea.
While it remains unclear whether this weather system will intensify into a full-scale depression, officials suggest the moisture-laden system may move inland. Forecasts indicate a gradual increase in rainfall over the next two days, with showers expected to spread across various parts of the country by Tuesday. Dhaka may see scattered, light rainfall as early as Sunday afternoon, providing a brief reprieve from the oppressive heat.
