Attack on Shah Ali Shrine: 3 arrested after watching video footage

A case has been filed against nine people in connection with the attack on devotees at the Shah Ali shrine in Mirpur of the capital. Shah Ali police station has arrested three people in this case so far. The arrested persons are Sheikh Md. Sazzadul Haque Russell (38), Md. Azam (40) and Md. Armaan Dewan (29).
Shah Ali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jahangir Alam confirmed this information at around 9:30 pm on Saturday.

OC Jahangir Alam said that a plaintiff named Reshmi Begum, who was injured in the attack, filed the case. Nine people have been accused in the case. Three of them have been arrested so far. Video footage showed all three arrested taking part in the attack. They were arrested by raids from different areas of Mirpur. The campaign is still going on.
Regarding the political identity of the accused, Jahangir Alam said, “The political identity of the accused could not be confirmed. Initially, I came to know that they are Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists.

9 defendants in the case are Md. Ali Akbar (48), Md. Bappa (35), Md. Babu (45), Md. Kausar (26), Md. Azam (40), Sheikh Md. Sazzadul Haque Russell (38), Kazi Zahir (52), Md. Mizan (38) and Kazi paneer (50). Two of them have been arrested.
Reshmi Begum, describing the incident in the affidavit of the case, said that she has been visiting Shah Ali shrine in Mirpur for 17 years. At various times he assisted the devotees by sheltering in the Ors hall of the shrine. Thousands of people throng the shrine every Thursday evening for vows and pilgrimage. 100-150 leaders-activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its affiliated organizations entered the main gate of the shrine and attacked them during the ziarat and manat activities on Thursday around 12:00 pm.
Reshmi Begum also said that the attackers tore the red cloth of the Shirni deg of the shrine at the base of the tree and vandalized the candle-lighting plate. If he prevented it, he was also beaten. He was molested by tearing off his clothes. 30,000 rupees worth of belongings of the shrine were damaged in the vandalism. Apart from this, he also mentioned in the statement that the attackers stole 90 thousand taka from the pilgrims.
The National Citizen Party (NCP) has demanded quick arrest of those involved in the attack on Shah Ali Shrine. An NCP delegation led by the party’s joint convener Sarwar Tushar visited the shrine on Saturday. At the same time, they expressed solidarity with the fans.
The NCP delegation included the party’s central joint member secretary Faridul Haque, Pritam Das, Humaira Noor, Dharma and Harmony Cell convener Tarek Reza, Labor Shakti convener Mazharul Islam Fakir, central members Fahim Khan Pathan and Zayed Bin Nasser, Yuva Shakti central leader Lutfar Rahman Nayan, national women’s power central leader Tahmina Sharmin Yuthi, Senior Joint Convenor of Metropolitan North Kazi Saiful Islam and Chief Coordinator of Shah Ali Police Station Shafiqul Islam Rana.
During the visit, they spoke to the victims of the attack and heard the details of the incident. Later they met with the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shah Ali Police Station and demanded that the people involved in the attack be brought under the law quickly.
At this time, Sarwar Tushar demanded the formation of an impartial investigation commission to investigate the incidents of attacks on various shrines in the country in the last two years. He said that the political identity of the people involved in the attack on various shrines including Philipnagar in Kushtia is clear. Despite that, the word ‘mob’ is being used to hide them. He also commented that it is not possible to avoid responsibility in this way.
