Armed Robbers Attack Speedboat on Padma River, Leaving Merchant Injured

Armed assailants launched a violent robbery on the Padma River Tuesday evening, intercepting a passenger speedboat near Charbhadrasan in Faridpur and leaving one businessman severely injured. The incident has sent shockwaves through local communities, marking a rare and concerning escalation of maritime crime in a region that has remained largely peaceful for over a decade.
The victim, 32-year-old businessman Liton Molla, was the sole passenger on a speedboat returning to Charbhadrasan from the Moinot Ghat in Dohar, Dhaka. According to local police and reports from the scene, the boat was intercepted at approximately 7:30 p.m. near the Faruk Molla char by a larger, double-engine vessel carrying the attackers.
Faced with the approaching threat, the speedboat driver, 39-year-old Sanjit Khalasi, steered his craft toward a nearby island and fled into the cover of tall reeds. He was later rescued by local law enforcement. Left behind, Mr. Molla was held at gunpoint by the gang, who robbed him of his mobile phone and cash before dismantling and stealing the speedboat’s engine and various mechanical components. Before fleeing the scene, the assailants struck Mr. Molla with a sharp weapon, inflicting a deep wound on his left hand. He was rescued by local fishermen and transported to a hospital in Dohar, where he continues to receive treatment.
The incident has caused significant alarm among residents and commuters who rely on this waterway for essential travel between the remote chars and the mainland. Cultural activist Abdus Sabur Molla, who works with the local riverine communities, noted that such brazen maritime robberies are unprecedented in the area over the last 12 years. He warned that if this critical transit corridor becomes unsafe, it would severely disrupt the livelihoods and security of thousands of residents.
Charbhadrasan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anwar Hossain confirmed the details of the attack and the rescue of the boat driver. While the suspects managed to escape before officers arrived on the scene, police have launched an investigation into the robbery. Authorities have vowed to identify and apprehend the gang members, pledging to strengthen security patrols along the waterway to prevent further incidents.
