Ashikur Rahman Mahmud Appointed Chairman of Newly Formed Comilla WASA Board

The government has appointed Ashikur Rahman Mahmud, also known as Wasim, as the chairman of the newly formed Comilla Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) board for a three-year term. Mahmud currently serves as the general secretary of the Comilla South District unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The appointment was confirmed on Sunday through a notification issued by the Water Supply-2 branch of the Local Government Division under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives. The notification cited Section 7(1) of the Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Amendment) Act, 2026, as the legal basis for the appointment.
The initiative to establish the Comilla WASA was formally approved on May 13 during a meeting chaired by Minister of Local Government Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. The objective of the new authority is to develop and manage a modern, sustainable water supply and sewage infrastructure for the city.
Mahmud, a veteran figure in local politics, previously served as the president of the Comilla Victoria Government College unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. He also held the position of Vice President (VP) of the college students’ union. His political career includes serving as the president of both the Comilla South District Chhatra Dal and the Juba Dal.
Following his appointment, Mahmud expressed gratitude to the government and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. He pledged to perform his duties with integrity and requested public cooperation to ensure the availability of safe drinking water and modern sanitation services for the residents of Comilla.
This appointment follows a series of administrative shifts within the district. On June 11, the government appointed Udbatul Bari Abu, president of the Comilla Metropolitan BNP, as the chairman of the newly established Comilla Development Authority. Earlier, on March 14, Mohammad Yusuf Molla Tipu, general secretary of the Comilla Metropolitan BNP, was appointed as the administrator of the Comilla City Corporation. Around the same period, Mostak Mia, an assistant organizing secretary for the BNP’s Comilla division, was appointed as the administrator of the Comilla Zila Parishad.
