The only accused arrested in the case of murdering the expatriate’s wife Reena Akhter and burying her body in sand has given a confessional statement in the court. Name of the arrested accused is Saiful Islam (29). He is the son of Abul Khair of Chochna village of Mohammad Ali Bazar area of Sharshdi Union of Feni Sadar Upazila. Saiful worked as a mason’s assistant in the building under construction.
The investigating officer of the case and inspector of PBI Mohammad Kausar Alam Bhuiyan confirmed the statement of the accused in the court. According to the police, after the murder, the accused turned off the phone and fled the area. But before leaving, the numbers contacted are identified and monitored. Thus he was arrested with the help of information technology.
According to PBI and court sources, Saiful Islam used to work in the building under construction of Mohammad Manik, a Saudi expatriate. Recently, after taking a loan from an NGO, he was reprimanded by the officials of the lending institution for not being able to pay the installments. Saiful mentioned in the deposition that he was mentally disturbed.
On the afternoon of May 12, Saiful was already staying there when Rina Akhtar, wife of expatriate Manik, visited the building under construction. In the deposition, he said, he saw the gold pendant in Rina’s ear and planned to snatch it. At one point, he twisted his hand around his neck from behind. Rina died of suffocation due to excessive pressure on her throat while removing the pendant.
Later, to hide the body, Saiful removed the sand from the floor of the house under construction and buried Rina’s body there. He then ran away, covering the area with empty cement sacks and sandblasters. It is mentioned in the statement that Rina’s younger son, who was killed in the evening, came to the spot and removed her by mistake.
In the statement given to the court, Saiful also said that Rina sold a pair of gold pendants removed from her ears to a local gold shop for Tk 15,500. Later, when the matter of murder was known in the area, he turned off the phone and fled to Chittagong. Stayed there with friends and consumed yaba with gold money sold.
Feni Superintendent of Police Ukya Singh Marma of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) said that Muharram Ali, the eldest son of the deceased Rina Akhtar, filed a murder case at the Feni Model Police Station as a plaintiff. After that, the PBI started the investigation along with police, detective police, RAB and other agencies. With the help of information technology, Saiful Islam was arrested from Nasirabad area of Chittagong within 40 hours of the incident on Thursday afternoon. Later, during interrogation, he confessed to the murder.
Asked whether action will be taken against the gold seller, the PBI Superintendent of Police said that the amount of gold sold was very small. One can sell or mortgage such small amount of gold. Therefore, no information was found to implicate the shopkeeper in this case.
Investigation Officer Kausar Alam Bhuiyan said that Saiful’s statement was recorded in the court on Friday afternoon based on the information given to the police. He also confessed to committing the murder alone in the court.
Kawsar Alam Bhuiyan also said that Saiful Islam has a fight case against him earlier in Feni Model Police Station. Locally he is known as a drug addict but there is no drug case against him.
Feni Court Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Islam said, after the statement, Saiful Islam was sent to the district jail in the evening.

Saiful Islam said that a murder case was filed against unknown accused on Wednesday in the case of killing Rina Akhtar and covering the floor of the building under construction with sand. Construction worker Saiful Islam was mentioned as a suspect in that case. After postmortem, the body was handed over to the family on Wednesday.
