Police in Gopalganj have launched an investigation into the death of a 38-year-old police officer whose body was recovered from a pond adjacent to his in-laws’ residence on Monday morning. The victim, Mahmudul Islam, was a sub-inspector serving with the 6th Armed Police Battalion in Mahalchhari, Khagrachhari.
Local residents discovered the body floating in the pond in Paikandi village and alerted authorities, who subsequently transported the remains to Gopalganj General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Following the discovery, police took the officer’s wife, Kaniz Fatema, and his father-in-law, Jhunu Sheikh, into custody for questioning regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.

Mahmudul, a resident of Bijoypasha village, had been visiting his in-laws since Friday after concluding official duties in Gopalganj. Family members have alleged foul play, citing a history of domestic discord and recent financial disputes involving the officer’s wife and her family. His brother, B.M. Ashikuzzaman, claimed that tensions had escalated recently over funds intended to send the officer’s brother-in-law abroad.
Further allegations were raised by the victim’s sister, Nadira Sultana, who asserted that the officer had previously survived two attempts on his life via poisoning. She expressed belief that her brother had been strangled before his body was disposed of in the pond. Conversely, Jalal Sheikh, a relative of the father-in-law, maintained that Mahmudul had gone to the pond for a morning bath and subsequently drowned.

Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aminul Islam stated that authorities are withholding conclusions regarding the cause of death until the autopsy report is finalized. He confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings of the forensic examination and subsequent interrogations.
