The country’s National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has launched a formal investigation against Punjab’s Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) Saqib Chadar in connection with allegations of online harassment, cyber bullying and death threats filed by popular Pakistani actress and model Momina Iqbal.

Accused Saqib Chadha is a lawmaker from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). The accused’s wife Samira Khan has also been included in the case.

Punjab NCCIA director Muhammad Ali Wasim told the media that the investigation of the case is being conducted in full due process of law and without any political pressure. Although the names of the accused were initially withheld due to legal obligations, details have recently emerged following public statements and hearings by lawyers on both sides.

The incident started on Wednesday (May 20), when actress Momina Iqbal released a lengthy statement on her Instagram account. There, he alleged that an influential political figure had been harassing and threatening him online for a long time.

When this urgent request of the actress spread quickly on social media, the chief minister’s office and the PML-N leadership took the matter seriously. Soon after, NCCIA Punjab chief Muhammad Ali Wasim issued formal summons to both Momina Iqbal and the accused MPA to appear at his office in Lahore.

On Thursday (May 21), both parties appeared before the investigating agency with their respective lawyers. Momina Iqbal’s lawyer told the media that the actress had a friendly relationship with the lawmaker since 2022 and at one point he even proposed to Momina. However, after learning that the said MPA was married, Momina withdrew from the relationship.

According to the complaint, the level of harassment escalated recently after Momina Iqbal got engaged elsewhere and wedding preparations began. The actress’s legal team claimed that MPA Shakib Chadha started threatening the actress’ future husband and also filed a false case against him.

Momina Iqbal’s lawyers have handed over all digital evidence (screenshots and call records) of cyber bullying and threats to the investigating agency. The NCCIA said the case is being investigated with utmost seriousness.
