Satkhira artisans craft unique Durga idol using matchsticks and silk thread

SATKHIRA, Bangladesh — Artisans in Satkhira are crafting a unique Goddess Durga idol using more than 150,000 matchsticks and 10 kilograms of silk thread for the upcoming Durga Puja festival. The intricate project is currently underway at the Brahmarajpur Sarbajanin Shri Shri Durga Puja Temple in the Dhulihar Union of Satkhira Sadar Upazila.

From a distance, the deity’s attire appears to be fashioned from fine fabric and elaborate jewelry, but closer inspection reveals the precision of the matchstick-and-silk construction. Artists are meticulously arranging matchsticks in both straight and wave-like patterns, incorporating silk thread to create the texture of the goddess’s sari pleats and decorative ornaments.

Lead sculptor Nabadwip Sarkar said he was inspired by a similar display he witnessed at a temple in India three years ago. To meet the deadline for the festival, the team has been working around the clock, sometimes until the early hours of the morning, to ensure the structural integrity and aesthetic precision of the design.

According to organizers, the project requires a significant investment. The cost for the artisans alone is approximately 130,000 taka, with the total budget for the entire festival installation estimated at 500,000 taka.

This is not the first time the temple committee in Brahmarajpur has opted for an unconventional approach. Last year, the committee gained regional attention for constructing a Durga idol using 100 kilograms of Chinigura rice. Encouraged by the positive public response to that display, the committee sought a more ambitious project for this year’s celebration.

Kanailal, an advisor to the committee, noted that the planning for this year’s exhibit began shortly after the conclusion of last year’s successful event. Local residents have already begun visiting the temple in large numbers to witness the progress of the work.

Vishwanath Ghosh, General Secretary of the Satkhira District Puja Udjapan Parishad, praised the aesthetic effort of the sculptors. He expressed optimism that the unique craftsmanship would draw large crowds, including visitors from outside the district, during the festival.
