Phantom Studios files 250 crore rupee lawsuit to block Queen sequel over intellectual property dispute

The highly anticipated sequel to the 2014 Bollywood hit “Queen,” starring Kangana Ranaut, has been stalled by a high-stakes legal battle as production house Phantom Studios moves to block its release. The company has filed a lawsuit in the Bombay High Court against Jio Studios, seeking 250 crore rupees in damages, alleging that the project was developed and filmed without authorization.
The legal action follows the completion of principal photography for the film, which was directed by Vikas Bahl. According to reports, Phantom Studios opted to pursue litigation after failed attempts to reach an amicable resolution with both the director and the production entity. Despite issuing formal legal notices and communicating their objections repeatedly, the studio reported that their concerns were met with no response.

At the core of the dispute is the ownership of intellectual property. Phantom Studios asserts that it retains a 50 percent stake in the original film’s rights, which it maintains grants the company a decisive role in any decisions regarding sequels or adaptations. As early as April, the studio publicly issued a statement clarifying that it had not granted permission for the creation of any follow-up projects based on the original narrative.
The original “Queen,” which garnered critical acclaim and two National Film Awards, including a Best Actress honor for Ranaut, was co-produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Phantom Films. Phantom Films was founded by Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane, Madhu Mantena, and Vikas Bahl. Following the dissolution of the original partnership in 2018, the studio was rebranded and relaunched as Phantom Studios in 2021. The film is currently in the post-production stage, leaving its release schedule in jeopardy as the court prepares to address the claims of copyright infringement.
