Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has been arrested by authorities in the United Arab Emirates in connection with a corruption case filed by Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission. The arrest of the former police chief, who had been out of the public eye since departing Bangladesh on May 4, 2024, has triggered widespread discussion across social media platforms.

Among those reacting to the news is prominent Dhallywood actress Pori Moni, who shared a news report regarding the arrest on her social media timeline with the single-word caption, “Moja” (Fun). Her post quickly drew significant attention, sparking a wave of commentary and debate among netizens.

Benazir Ahmed served as the Inspector General of Police from April 2020 to September 2022, following tenures as the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner and the Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). His tenure was marked by significant controversy, notably in December 2021, when the United States imposed sanctions on several RAB officials—including Ahmed—citing serious human rights violations.

Since leaving the country earlier this year, Ahmed’s whereabouts had remained largely unknown until his reported apprehension in the UAE. The legal proceedings in Bangladesh continue to move forward as authorities pursue the corruption allegations leveled against him.
