Actor Zaher Alvi Appears in Court Over Wife Suicide Abetment Case

Television actor Niamat Ullah Bhuiya, professionally known as Zaher Alvi, appeared before a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate court on Thursday in connection with a case filed against him for allegedly abetting the suicide of his wife, Afra Ibnath Khan Ikra. Alvi was accompanied by his mother, Nasrin Sultana, during the court proceedings.
The case was scheduled for the submission of an investigation report by the Detective Branch of police. However, the investigating officer failed to submit the report, prompting Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid to set September 28 as the new date for the filing. The court also extended Alvi’s bail period until the newly appointed date.
Abzal Hossain Mridha, a lawyer representing the plaintiff, confirmed the court’s order and noted that the victim’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan, was unable to attend the hearing due to illness. Following the proceedings, Alvi declined to comment on the specifics of the case, telling reporters only that he believes in divine providence.
The legal proceedings stem from an incident on February 28, when Afra Ibnath Khan Ikra was found hanging from a ceiling fan at the couple’s residence in the Mirpur DOHS area of the capital. She was transported to Kurmitola General Hospital, where attending physicians declared her dead. At the time of the incident, Alvi was in Nepal.
That same evening, the victim’s father filed a case with Mirpur Model Police Station, alleging that chronic domestic discord and physical abuse drove his daughter to commit suicide. The lawsuit names Alvi and other associated individuals as suspects in the abetment of suicide.
Alvi was previously denied bail and sent to prison on June 18 after surrendering to the court. He was subsequently placed on a two-day remand for interrogation before ultimately securing bail from the High Court on August 3. His mother, Nasrin Sultana, had previously surrendered to the court and received bail on June 4.
The couple, who were married in 2010, share one son.
