Students protested in Kushtia demanding arrest and speedy trial of the accused in the murder case of Asma Sadia (Runa), President and Assistant Professor of Social Welfare Department of Islamic University. At that time, they locked the administrative building and the main gate of the university.

According to eyewitness sources, the students gathered in front of the administration building with a protest march from the front of the Theology and Islamic Studies building of the university on Wednesday afternoon. At this time, the students chanted slogans like ‘Rashi Lagle Rashi Ne, Khunider Fansi De’, ‘Many virtues of the administration, people are killed at noon’, ‘People die at noon, what does the administration do’, ‘Amar mam kabare, Khuni ke bahire’, ‘Diechi to rakta, more deva rakta’, ‘Administration fake fake’ etc.

At one stage of the protest, the students locked the university administration building and blocked the university officials and employees including the vice-chancellor. At this time they also locked the main gate of the university. The students demanded speedy trial of the culprits through an impartial investigation into Asma Sadia’s murder, financial compensation for the teacher’s family and employment of one member, naming one of the university’s under-construction buildings after Asma Sadia and resolution of all the ongoing crises of the department.

After receiving the news, Vice Chancellor Professor Naqeeb Mohammad Nasrullah and Masood Rana, Officer-in-Charge of Islami University Police Station went to the spot. When informed about the progress of the case and assured to fulfill the demands of the students, the students unlocked the gate.

Masood Rana, officer-in-charge of Islami University Police Station, said that it was not possible to take his statement as Fazlur Rahman, the main accused in the murder, could not speak yet. Apart from this, several raids have been conducted in different places to arrest the three accused in the case. But they were not found. The phone used by them is also switched off. He said that letters have been sent to each immigration office with reference to the case so that the accused cannot escape outside the country. Besides, the process of their arrest is going on through Raben.

University Vice-Chancellor Professor Nakeeb Mohammad Nasrullah said that the internal investigation committee of the university will give their report very soon. To solve the shortage of teachers in the department, part-time teachers will be appointed, it will be proposed to name a hall after Asma Sadia. After the death or murder of a teacher of the university, the family of the teacher has applied for the amount due as per the rules. The university administration will resolve the matter quickly. Sadia’s husband will be given priority if appointed at the university officer level and work is being done to ensure maximum punishment for the guilty.

Asma Sadia Runa, president and assistant professor of social welfare department, was stabbed to death in her office at Islami University on the afternoon of March 4. At the same time, political science department employee Fazlur Rahman (35) was rescued from that room with serious injuries. Asma’s husband Muha at Islami University police station late that night. Imtiaz Sultan filed a murder case. In the statement, he mentioned that the employee Fazlur Rahman killed his wife with the long planning and instructions of two teachers and an officer of the department. Unidentified persons are also accused in the case. However, the number was not mentioned.

Accused number 2 in the case Biswajit Kumar Ummul Momenin Ayesha Siddika Assistant Registrar of Hall. A few days ago, he was transferred there from the social welfare department. Apart from this, the accused number 3 and 4 are Assistant Professor Shyam Sundar Sarkar and Habibur Rahman of Social Welfare Department respectively. Shyam Sundar was earlier the president of Asma Sadia’s division. These three accused are absconding.
