Police arrest expelled Sramik Dal leader Ali Kaiser Pintu in Dhaka over extortion charges

Police have arrested Mohammad Ali Kaysar Pintu, an expelled leader of the Sramik Dal, on charges of extorting 1 million taka from the Inter-District Truck Owners Association in the capital’s Mohammadpur area. Following his arrest, he was transferred to the custody of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch for further interrogation.

Authorities confirmed the arrest on Wednesday, stating that Pintu was taken into custody on Tuesday afternoon. According to Mohammad Abdul Halim, officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur Police Station, the suspect faces multiple charges, including extortion, vandalism, and physical assault.

The case details indicate that on the afternoon of August 31, Pintu and several associates arrived at the Inter-District Truck Owners Association office located at the Bhanga Masjid Truck Terminal in Sat Masjid Housing. They allegedly demanded 1 million taka, insisting on an immediate payment of 500,000 taka. When the association members refused, the group reportedly vandalized the office, causing an estimated 20,000 taka in damages, and assaulted association member Belayet Hossain.

Police records indicate that Pintu has at least eight active cases filed against him at the Mohammadpur Police Station. He is also listed by law enforcement as a high-profile extortionist.

Pintu was expelled from his position as the convener of the Mohammadpur Thana unit of the Sramik Dal and stripped of his party membership in May of last year for violating internal discipline. In a formal communication to the police, the party had previously accused him of engaging in terrorism, extortion, and illegal land grabbing, urging authorities to take necessary legal action.
