Islamic Foundation of Bangladesh Reconstitutes Board of Governors Including Lawmakers and Religious Scholars

The government has reconstituted the Board of Governors of the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh, incorporating two members of parliament and three prominent Islamic scholars into the governing body.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs issued a formal notification regarding the reorganization on Tuesday. The order, issued under the authority of the President, was signed by Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affairs Md. Jehadul Bari.

Under the new structure, two members of parliament—State Minister for Religious Affairs Mohammad Shamim Kaiser, representing Gaibandha-4, and Shahjahan Chowdhury, representing Cox’s Bazar-4—have been appointed as governors.

The reconstituted board features five Islamic scholars, three of whom are new appointees. The new members include Mufti Monir Hossain Qasemi, Joint Secretary General of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh and principal of Jamia Madania Baridhara, Dhaka; Mufti Azharul Islam, Director General of Markazul Huda Al-Islami Bangladesh and Assistant Secretary General of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh; and Mufti Sharif Ullah, principal of Noor-e-Madina Al-Arabia Madrasa and Secretary General of the Sammilito Imam-Khatib Parishad.

Two existing scholars retain their positions on the board: Maulana Mahfuzul Haque, Secretary General of Befaqul Madarishil Arabia Bangladesh, and Maulana Syed Md. Mosaddeq Billah Al Madani, a presidium member of Islami Andolan Bangladesh and principal of Charmonai Ahsanabad Rashidia Kamil Madrasa.

The Minister of Religious Affairs serves as the ex-officio chairman of the Board of Governors. Other ex-officio members include the Chairman of the University Grants Commission, the Secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University, and the Chairman of the Bangladesh Madrasa Education Board. The Director General of the Islamic Foundation serves as the member secretary.

Non-ex-officio governors will serve a three-year term effective from the date of the notification. They will continue to hold their positions beyond this period until the government appoints new successors. Furthermore, the government reserves the right to replace or remove any non-ex-officio governor at its discretion.
