Police begin questioning suspects at Rangpur Central Jail in Ganapati Chakraborty murder case

RANGPUR — The Detective Branch (DB) of the Rangpur Metropolitan Police has commenced questioning two suspects in jail custody regarding the murder of retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and his family.

A three-member team, led by investigation officer and police inspector Jinnat Ali, arrived at the Rangpur Central Jail on Tuesday at approximately 11:45 a.m. to interrogate the suspects, identified as Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das.

Police sources stated that the interrogation aims to verify new evidence collected during the investigation and to determine if these findings align with the suspects’ earlier judicial confessions. The session follows an order from the Rangpur Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court-2, issued on Monday by Judge Rafiqul Islam. Although police had requested a three-day remand, the court granted permission for the suspects to be questioned for three hours daily over a two-day period. The hearing was conducted via video conference, with legal aid counsel representing the accused.

Deputy Police Commissioner of the Metropolitan DB, Sanatan Chakraborty, acknowledged that while there is typically no legal provision to remand suspects after they have provided a confession under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the court granted this exceptional access due to the appointment of a new investigation officer and the emergence of fresh information.

The investigation has been complicated by inconsistencies regarding the suspects’ claims. While Siddhartha and Mugdha testified that they consumed Yaba tablets prior to the murders, subsequent drug tests conducted on the suspects returned negative results. Addressing these discrepancies, Sanatan Chakraborty stated that the investigation remains active and that further necessary actions will be taken as evidence is processed.

Ganapati Chakraborty, a former accounting teacher at Rangpur Zila School, retired in December 2025 and had been practicing homeopathic medicine. On August 22, police recovered the bodies of Chakraborty, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, his daughter Agami Chakraborty, and his son Ayush Chakraborty. Following the discovery, the victim’s elder brother, Gopinath Chakraborty, filed a murder case against unidentified individuals at Kotwali Police Station.
