Police release family of jailed Chandpur jeweler accused of fraud

CHANDPUR — Police have released the wife and two children of a detained gold merchant into the custody of their relatives after finding no evidence of their direct involvement in a fraud scheme. The individuals were released to the care of Sunil Das, the father of the accused, Pintu Das.
Pintu Das, the owner of S K Jewelers located at Akhanda Market in Chandpur, is currently in custody following allegations that he misappropriated gold ornaments and cash belonging to his customers. According to Officer-in-Charge of Chandpur Model Police Station, Fayez Ahmed, seven customers have filed formal complaints against Das, alleging that he embezzled their valuables. Authorities are currently working to recover the misappropriated gold.
The investigation began after seven victims reported that they had pledged various gold items—including chains, earrings, and lockets—to S K Jewelers in exchange for loans. When the customers attempted to reclaim their ornaments after repaying the borrowed amounts, Das allegedly stalled the process. On the night of August 19, Das closed his shop and residence, fleeing the area with his family.
Following the victims’ complaints and a general diary entry filed by the landlord of the premises, police launched an investigation. Utilizing information technology to track his movements, officers from the Chandpur Model Police Station located and apprehended Das and his family in Patiya, Chittagong, on the morning of August 28.
During interrogation, Das confessed to defrauding customers of their gold and more than 2.5 million BDT. Following the confession, a victim identified as Md. Russell Khan filed a lawsuit at the Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station under the Penal Code for fraud and breach of trust. Das was formally arrested in connection with the case and remanded to judicial custody by a court on Saturday.
