Police arrest two with eight illegal firearms in Coxs Bazar Maheshkhali raid

Police in Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar, arrested two individuals late Saturday night after seizing a cache of eight locally manufactured firearms. Authorities disclosed details of the operation during a press briefing held at the Maheshkhali Police Station on Sunday afternoon.
The arrested suspects have been identified as 38-year-old Manik De from the Thakurtala area of Maheshkhali and 34-year-old Md. Rubel Mia from the Kusumpura Union of Patiya Upazila in Chittagong. The recovered weaponry includes one rifle, six single-barrel shotguns, and one locally made firearm known as an LG.
Additional Superintendent of Police Ohidur Rahman stated that the operation follows an earlier investigation initiated on August 21, when police raided deep forest areas in Mithachhari, under the Shaplapur Union of Maheshkhali. That initial operation resulted in the arrest of one individual and the seizure of significant quantities of arms-manufacturing equipment. Following intelligence gathered from the suspect, police maintained surveillance to track further illicit shipments.
Authorities received a tip-off on Saturday night that a consignment of firearms was being transported via a CNG-run auto-rickshaw from the Adinath Jetty area in Choto Maheshkhali to Badarkhali in Chakaria. Acting on this information, officers established a checkpoint at the Thakurtala intersection.
According to the additional superintendent, the suspects attempted to evade the checkpoint when signaled to stop. While police successfully apprehended two individuals after a brief pursuit, two other suspects managed to flee the scene. A subsequent search of the auto-rickshaw led to the discovery of the firearms, which were found wrapped in plastic.
Maheshkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdus Sultan confirmed that a case has been filed against the two detainees under the Arms Act. They were subsequently presented before a court. Police have launched an ongoing operation to locate and apprehend the two accomplices who escaped during the raid.
