Local Awami League Ward President Hospitalized Following Assault in Patuakhali

A local leader of the now-banned Awami League was critically injured in an attack in the Baliatoli Union of Kalapara Upazila, Patuakhali, on Saturday evening.
The victim, 67-year-old Shah Alam Molla, serves as the president of Ward No. 3 in the Baliatoli Union. The assault occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. in the Chourasta area. Family members allege that the attackers used a tree trunk to assault him, resulting in a fractured right ankle and multiple injuries to his head and body.
Runa Begum, the daughter-in-law of the victim, stated that Shah Alam Molla was at the Chourasta market purchasing supplies for a memorial prayer service scheduled for Sunday in honor of his late grandson. She alleged that a group of seven to eight individuals, including Rumman, Touhid, and Din Islam, attacked her father-in-law. According to Begum, the assailants are associates of Mujibur Rahman, the president of the local Union branch of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Mujibur Rahman has denied any involvement in the incident. He dismissed the accusations as politically motivated, stating that he has no knowledge of the perpetrators and that the allegations were fabricated to gain political leverage.
Medical officer Poli Saha of the Kalapara Upazila Health Complex confirmed that the patient sustained severe injuries, particularly to his right leg. Following initial treatment, he was transferred to the Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for advanced medical care.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalapara Police Station, Nazrul Islam, confirmed that police were dispatched to the scene upon receiving reports of the incident. He stated that law enforcement authorities are prepared to initiate legal proceedings once a formal written complaint is filed by the victim’s family.
