Man surrenders to Gazipur police after confessing to killing father-in-law over family dispute

A 35-year-old man surrendered to police in Kaliganj on Saturday morning, confessing to the murder of his father-in-law in a dispute allegedly fueled by accusations of witchcraft and domestic strife.

Mozammel Haque, also known as Muza Sarkar, walked into the Kaliganj Police Station and admitted to killing 70-year-old Majid Morol, a banana trader from the Jamalpur area of the upazila. The victim was attacked with an axe on Friday afternoon while walking toward the Jamalpur market. Eyewitness accounts and police reports indicate that Mozammel struck the victim in the head from behind, leaving him critically injured. Despite being rushed to the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, the victim was pronounced dead by attending physicians.

Following the attack, the victim’s son, Liton Morol, filed a murder case against Mozammel on Friday night.

Family members of the deceased alleged that the marriage, which took place eight years ago between Mozammel and Majid’s daughter, Shahanara, was marked by years of physical and mental abuse. According to the family, Mozammel frequently demanded money from his father-in-law and subjected his wife to violence when those demands were not met. Shahanara had been living at her father’s home for the past two weeks after allegedly being driven out by her husband, vowing not to return to the marriage.

In his confession to authorities, Mozammel claimed that his father-in-law had been practicing black magic, which he alleged led to his wife leaving him and refusing to communicate. Neighbors described Mozammel as a long-term drug user whose relationship with his in-laws had deteriorated significantly due to ongoing domestic conflict.

Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Zakir Hossain confirmed the surrender and the subsequent arrest. He stated that the suspect admitted to the crime and that preparations were underway to present him before the court to be remanded into judicial custody.
