Young man found dead in Sunamganj following theft accusation and local arbitration

SUNAMGANJ — Police in Sunamganj recovered the hanging body of 23-year-old Emran Hossain on Saturday morning at his home in Berajali village, located in the Sadar Upazila’s Gourarang Union. The victim, son of Abdul Hashim, was found with a rope tied to a bamboo beam on the veranda of his family residence.
Authorities recovered a note from the pocket of the victim’s shirt during the initial investigation. The body was subsequently sent to the Sunamganj District Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Officer-in-Charge of the Sadar Model Police Station, Ratan Sheikh, confirmed the incident, stating that officials are currently investigating the scene, though the contents of the recovered note remain under review.
The victim’s family alleges that the death followed a local dispute and a contentious village arbitration. Tuhin Hossain, the victim’s younger brother, explained that the incident stemmed from an accusation of theft involving a water pump and electrical wiring belonging to a local resident named Chan Mia. Chan Mia’s son, Abul Fazl, had accused Emran and another villager, Nilu Mia, of the theft.
A village arbitration was held on Friday night at the office of Gourarang Union Parishad Chairman Shawkat Ali, who also serves as the joint convener of the district Jatiya Party. According to Abdul Hashim, the victim’s father, witnesses present at the arbitration testified that they had no knowledge of the theft. Despite this, Hashim claims the Chairman and Chan Mia insisted on pinning the blame on his son. He further alleged that when his wife, Sahara Begum, attempted to speak during the meeting, the Chairman threatened and attempted to assault her, ultimately setting a Monday deadline for the return of the missing items under threat of police involvement.
Abdul Hashim stated that his son was deeply distressed by the humiliation suffered during the arbitration. Despite efforts by the family to console him following the meeting, Emran was discovered dead the following morning. The grieving father maintains that his son was innocent of the theft charges and died due to the disgrace inflicted upon their family during the proceedings.
Chairman Shawkat Ali has denied the allegations of intimidation. He stated that he did not threaten the victim or his family and suggested that the conflict was rooted in a financial dispute between relatives. The Chairman further claimed that the victim was under the burden of debt and that the meeting was intended to resolve these family issues, with the discussion regarding the missing water pump scheduled to continue on Monday.
