Notorious Hitman Known for Dual-Wielding Pistols Arrested in Chittagong Following Multi-Year Crime Spree

Chittagong police have apprehended a notorious criminal identified as Mohammad Mobarak, widely known as “Golakata Mobarak,” following a high-stakes operation in the hilly region of Fatikchhari. Mobarak, a figure documented in numerous CCTV recordings for his brazen public shootings and targeted assassinations, had long evaded law enforcement by hiding in the remote terrains of Fatikchhari and Raozan.
The arrest occurred after a tactical confrontation in which Mobarak fired six rounds at police officers, who returned fire before taking him into custody. Authorities recovered three pistols, 23 rounds of pistol ammunition, and four shotgun shells from Mobarak and his three associates. Notably, the weapon Mobarak used to fire at the police was identified as one looted from the Kotwali police station during the unrest following August 5, 2024.
Chittagong District Superintendent of Police Mohammad Masud Alam stated that Mobarak operated as a high-ranking lieutenant to Sajjad Ali, a fugitive criminal currently hiding abroad. Mobarak was noted for his proficiency in dual-wielding firearms, a skill he frequently displayed during contract killings and extortion attempts. Investigators noted that he often slept with advanced weaponry, including submachine guns (SMGs).
Born to a family in Kanchannagar, Fatikchhari, Mobarak’s criminal career began as a painter’s assistant before he allegedly committed a beheading in 2014, earning him his infamous moniker. Over the years, he maintained ties with various criminal syndicates, including those led by Nasir Uddin, Abu Tayeb, and David Emon. He is also alleged to have been sheltered by former Union Parishad Chairman Abul Kashem, a suspect in the high-profile murder of businessman Jamal Uddin Chowdhury.
Police link Mobarak to at least seven murders, including the daylight assassination of Juba Dal leader Masudul Haque Chowdhury in Raozan on June 13. CCTV footage of the Raozan incident shows Mobarak shooting the victim, returning after 40 seconds to ensure the killing, and escaping by autorickshaw. Other investigations link him to the murders of Sarwar Hossain in Bayezid Bostami, two individuals in Bakalia, and various other victims in Patenga, Raozan, and Chandgaon.
Beyond homicide, Mobarak was a prolific extortionist. Police investigations confirmed he orchestrated shootings at the residences of prominent businessmen, including former MP Mujibur Rahman and trader Absar Uddin Chowdhury, when extortion demands were not met. CCTV evidence captured Mobarak and his accomplices firing indiscriminately at these properties.
Regarding his survival in the underworld, police discovered that Mobarak utilized his personal connections to secure refuge in remote hills. He allegedly leveraged ties with a separatist organization to facilitate the purchase and storage of illegal weapons, with his two wives, Dolly Chakma and Runu Akter, acting as intermediaries.
The arrest highlights the ongoing challenge of recovering weapons looted during the 2024 political crisis. Out of 944 firearms looted from police facilities in Chittagong, 148 remain missing. Authorities remain concerned that these weapons continue to fuel violent crime across the region. Mobarak has since provided a confessional statement to the court, detailing his role in multiple high-profile killings.
