Seven injured as rival National Citizen Party factions clash in Kulaura

Seven people were injured in a violent clash between two factions of the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Kulaura, Moulvibazar, late Thursday. The altercation, which took place in the Uttar Bazar area of Kulaura municipality, has led to the arrest of five individuals, including a district-level leader.
The conflict erupted following a gathering at a local restaurant, where party members had met with Ehtesham Haque, the NCP Sylhet divisional organizational secretary, who was visiting his in-laws. Witnesses reported that as members left the restaurant around 8:00 p.m., a verbal dispute escalated into a physical confrontation.
The injured were identified as Safwan Jahan Chowdhury, Jabed Rahman, Maruf Al Hamid, Raju Ahmad, Shafakat Hossain, Zillu Khan, and Ariful Islam, all of whom are associated with the NCP and its youth and student wings. They received medical treatment at the Kulaura Upazila Health Complex.
Police responded to the scene and arrested Ehsan Zakaria, Tofael Ahmad, Sahel Ahmad, Fahim Ahmad, and Sohag Mia. Among those detained is Ehsan Zakaria, the joint convener of the Moulvibazar district unit of the NCP.
Tamim Ahmad, a former joint coordinator of the Moulvibazar district NCP, filed a case at the Kulaura Police Station late Thursday, naming 10 individuals and accusing 15 others. According to the case statement, the conflict stemmed from an alleged extortion attempt. The plaintiff claimed that Zakaria had demanded 500,000 taka in exchange for a party position. After Ahmad refused and expressed his grievances on social media, he was allegedly targeted by the suspects.
Ahmad stated that he was returning home to Barlekha upazila when he and his associates were ambushed outside the restaurant. Ruhul Amin, the member secretary of the Moulvibazar district NCP, characterized the attack as premeditated and stated that the party is currently gathering information to determine appropriate disciplinary actions against the perpetrators.
Kulaura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Zahirul Islam confirmed that the five arrested suspects were presented before a Moulvibazar court on Friday morning in connection with the filed case.
