Brooklyn shooting victim identified as sole breadwinner for family in Bangladesh as police hunt suspect in two fatal attacks

BROOKLYN, New York — A 44-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh, Md. Yusuf, was shot and killed during a robbery attempt at a Brooklyn eatery, leaving his family destitute. Police have identified the suspect as 31-year-old Jesus Acosta, who is also accused of killing another man in the Bronx just 48 hours later.

The incident occurred at the American Best Wings and Pizza shop on Rockaway Avenue in Brownsville. According to the restaurant’s co-owner, Russel, the gunman entered the premises late Sunday night while the store was closed to the public. Investigators believe the assailant gained entry through a door that had been left ajar for staff.

Surveillance footage captured the gunman firing indiscriminately upon entry. A 39-year-old co-worker of Yusuf attempted to evade the gunfire by leaping aside, sustaining a gunshot wound to his right leg. Russel stated that this reflexive action likely saved the co-worker’s life, as the shot would have otherwise struck his chest. Yusuf, who was stationed near the cash register, had no means of escape and was fatally shot in the head.

Despite initial police theories that the motive was robbery, Russel confirmed that no money was taken from the cash register during the attack. The surviving co-worker remains hospitalized at Brookdale University Hospital, where he is recovering from his injuries.

Yusuf was the sole breadwinner for his family in Bangladesh, supporting his wife, two daughters—aged 3 and 12—and his elderly parents. Describing him as a close friend rather than just an employee, Russel noted that Yusuf came from a background of extreme poverty and that his loss represents an irreparable blow to his family’s livelihood.

Authorities released surveillance images of Acosta on Tuesday, appealing to the public for information leading to his arrest. Police reported that Acosta struck again early Tuesday, shortly after midnight, at a store near Walton Avenue in Mott Haven. In that incident, the suspect fatally shot a 33-year-old customer in the chest before fleeing with cash from the register. The victim in the Bronx shooting later succumbed to his injuries at Lincoln Hospital.
