Court Grants Five-Day Remand for Actor Ashraful Haque Don in Salman Shah Murder Case

A Dhaka court on Thursday granted a five-day remand for actor Ashraful Haque, widely known by his screen name Don, in connection with the murder case of popular film star Salman Shah.
Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana issued the order following a hearing. State prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi confirmed the development, noting that the court move comes as part of an ongoing investigation into the high-profile death of the actor nearly three decades ago.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police, which is currently handling the case, had originally sought a seven-day remand for Don on August 20. Inspector Mujibur Rahman of the CID’s Dhaka Metropolitan South unit argued before the court that the suspect’s interrogation was essential to ensure a thorough investigation into the case, which has remained a subject of intense public interest.
During the hearing, the state prosecutor emphasized the gravity of the case, stating that the public is awaiting justice for the late actor. Prosecutors further alleged that there had been attempts to obstruct the legal process through intimidation, highlighting the necessity of custodial interrogation to uncover the truth.
Counsel for the defendant, Faridul Islam, argued that his client is innocent. He maintained that Don had ample opportunity to flee the country if he were involved in the crime but chose to stay, asserting that a remand was not warranted.
Don was apprehended by authorities at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on August 9. He was subsequently remanded to jail, and a previous bail plea filed on August 12 was rejected by the court.
Salman Shah was found dead in his apartment in the Eskaton area of Dhaka on September 6, 1996. Following years of investigation and legal disputes, a court ordered the filing of a murder case last year. The case was initiated by Alamgir Kumkum, brother of Salman Shah’s mother Nila Chowdhury, at the Ramna Model Police Station in October.
The case lists 11 individuals as suspects, including Salman Shah’s former wife Samira Haque, actor Ashraful Haque (Don), Samira’s mother Latifa Haque Lucy, and businessman Aziz Mohammad Bhai, alongside David, Javed, Faruq, Ruby, Abdus Sattar, Saju, and Rezvi Ahmed, alias Farhad.
The CID is currently tasked with investigating the matter, with the court setting August 30 as the deadline for the submission of the investigation report.
