Four students injured in clash between Rajshahi University departments over seating dispute

RAJSHAHI, Bangladesh — Four students were injured in violent clashes between the Management Studies and Chemistry departments at Rajshahi University on Wednesday night, prompting the administration to form a three-member investigation committee.
The altercation began at approximately 10:00 p.m. at the Shaheed Sukharanjan Samaddar Teacher-Student Cultural Center (TSCC) following a dispute over seating arrangements during an event. Despite initial efforts to mediate, tensions escalated, leading to intermittent clashes and chases between the two groups near the Nawab Abdul Latif Hall and the respective academic buildings of the two departments.
According to university medical center physician Sajid Hafiz, four students sought medical attention following the confrontation. Two of the victims, Ferdous Hasan and Sajidur Rahman, sustained significant head and eye injuries and were transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Ferdous Hasan was later admitted to the intensive care unit due to the severity of his condition.
Witnesses reported that the dispute turned physical when students from the Management Studies department allegedly attacked Chemistry students behind Nawab Abdul Latif Hall. In retaliation, Chemistry students targeted the Management Studies academic building, leading to an exchange of brickbats between students positioned on the upper floors and those on the ground. Both academic buildings reportedly suffered damage during the unrest.
University Assistant Proctor Professor Rafiqul Islam confirmed that authorities had intervened to restore order and brought the situation under control.
In response to the violence, university Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Alim announced the immediate formation of a three-member probe committee to conduct a fair investigation. The committee is led by Professor Saiful Islam, former dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, and includes Professor Ariful Islam of the Philosophy Department and Professor Sahal Uddin of the Department of Law and Land Administration.
Attempts to reach representatives from both student groups for comment were unsuccessful. The university administration has urged calm as the investigation proceeds.
