Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck Holds Talks With President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir During Dhaka Stopover

King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka early Wednesday, where he was received by President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir during a brief stopover. The monarch, traveling from Singapore, held a courtesy meeting with the President at the airport’s VVIP lounge.
During the discussions, President Alamgir extended an official invitation to the King and the royal family to visit Bangladesh at their convenience. In turn, the King invited the President and the Prime Minister to visit Bhutan. The King also offered his formal congratulations and well-wishes to President Alamgir on his assumption of office.
President Alamgir emphasized the deep-rooted historical ties between the two nations, noting that Bhutan holds a unique place in the hearts of the Bangladeshi people as the first country to recognize Bangladesh’s independence on December 6, 1971. The President also reflected on the long-standing affection and respect shown toward Bangladesh by the King’s father, Jigme Singye Wangchuck.
The King underscored the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation across sectors including education, trade, and investment to foster shared development and prosperity. He briefed the President on his “Gelephu Mindfulness City” project and sought Bangladesh’s participation and support for the initiative. President Alamgir expressed interest in the project, affirming that Bangladesh is prepared to work closely with Bhutan to advance regional transformative initiatives aimed at sustainable development and mutual growth.
The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, the Ambassador of Bhutan to Bangladesh, and several senior government officials. Following the discussion, the King’s aircraft departed for Bhutan at approximately 6:30 a.m.
