Court Grants Five Day Remand for Suspect in Assault on Dhaka Medical College Hospital Department Head

A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted a five-day remand for a suspect identified as Jibon, alias Adil, in connection with the assault on Professor Asadur Rahman, the head of the Ear, Nose, and Throat department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Hasan Shahadat issued the order following a hearing. Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi confirmed the development, noting that the suspect was produced in court by the police. The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Md. Atikuzzaman of Paltan Model Police Station, had initially requested a ten-day remand to facilitate the investigation.
Authorities have now arrested three individuals in relation to the attack. Another suspect, Farhan Shahriar Evan, is currently serving a five-day remand period, and police have filed for the remand of a third suspect.
The assault occurred on the night of August 17 in the Shantinagar area of the capital. According to the case documents, Professor Rahman had just exited the Popular Diagnostic Center and boarded a three-wheeler when four individuals intercepted the vehicle. Despite the physician’s instructions to keep the doors locked, the driver complied with the assailants’ demands, allowing them to pull Professor Rahman from the vehicle and begin a physical assault.
Investigators reported that the suspect Jibon allegedly punched the physician in the left eye, causing severe injury. The group continued to strike the victim on the head and across his body. Bystanders were alerted by the victim’s cries and managed to detain Jibon at the scene, while the remaining attackers fled. Paltan police arrived shortly thereafter to rescue the physician and transport him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he remains under treatment.
Professor Rahman filed the formal case on August 18. He stated that he had been subjected to extortion attempts prior to the attack, having received a demand for $15,000 in the name of a Chittagong-based criminal, David Emon. The assault took place two days after the deadline for the extortion payment had expired.
