International Crimes Tribunal orders three journalists to jail over July uprising violence

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Monday ordered three prominent journalists to be sent to prison in connection with cases involving crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising.

The court formally arrested Shyamal Dutta, Mozammel Babu, and Farzana Rupa in relation to allegations that they incited violence, killings, and torture against protesters during the civil unrest.

Shyamal Dutta is the editor of the newspaper Bhorer Kagoj and the former general secretary of the National Press Club. Mozammel Babu is the founder and former editor-in-chief of Ekattor Television, while Farzana Rupa is the former chief reporter and presenter for the same broadcaster.

During Monday’s proceedings, Prosecutor S.M. Moinul Karim argued that the defendants used their positions to incite the fatal attacks and the subsequent abuse of demonstrators.

The tribunal granted the prosecution’s request for additional time to complete the investigation. The court has set October 25 as the deadline for the submission of the investigative report.

The three individuals were presented before the tribunal in compliance with a previous order issued on August 17, which had mandated their appearance to face the ongoing proceedings.
